Our History

This is a compiled history of Troop 935 that has been pulled together from multiple sources, such as committee meeting minutes, Court of Honor brochures, Council records, personal calendars, and random memories of past Scouts and Scouters. As you can see, it is very rough and there are many gaps of information that we would love to fill in. Any information on missing events would be a welcome addition. Feel free to contact Jack Smith to discuss!

1967-1979        1980-1989

1990-1989        2000-2010

1967

In the early months of 1967, a group of men at McDonaldsville St. Paul’s Episcopal United Brethren Church met to form a Committee to support a new Boy Scout troop, and they registered Troop 35 in the Sippo District of the Buckeye Council. Men involved with this group were Don Block, Earl Ickes, Ron Kocsis, Bill Eutzly, Terry Mulheim, Dan Keck, Charles Wilkinson, Art Wagner and Rev. Charles Ulmer, among others. Ron Kocsis was the first Scoutmaster, with Bill Eutzly agreeing to be an Assistant. The committee met on the last Wednesday of each month, with the Troop meetings held every Monday from 7 to 9 pm. There were approximately 10 boys registered on the first Troop Charter. They attended Camp Buckeye July 9-15 that summer. Funds for operating the Troop were raised through collecting and selling old newspapers and by holding a Tupperware party.

Collecting old newspapers and a Tupperware party was again the choice of fundraisers. In March, Ron Kocsis resigned as Scoutmaster, and was replaced by David Young. Discussions were held about moving meetings to Tuesday nights but not enacted. However, meetings were shortened from 7-8:30 pm. Cub Scout Pack 121, chartered to Jackson Elementary School and led by Cubmaster Pete Agrusa, began a relationship with the Troop that lasted until 1977.

The Troop’s first contingency to Philmont was created and ?? boys attended. 1976:

The American Bicentennial brought more changes to Troop 35, as the Districts were reorganized and the Sippo District was renamed to the Westark District, which included Jackson Township to the west of Brunnerdale/Lake-O-Springs Road and most of western Stark County. There was the remaining problem of duplicate unit numbers as a results of the merger of Massillon Area and McKinley Councils in 1958. Up until this time, Districts had full control over assigning new unit numbers and there was no concern over other District's unit numbers within the council. Buckeye Council determined that the old Massillon Area troops that had the same unit number as those of old McKinley Council troops would now add a ‘900’ to their unit numbers. This is how Troop 35 became Troop 935 (Troop 21, at St. Jacobs Lutheran Church on Mudbrook Street became 921; and Troop 27 at the Lake Cable Clubhouse became 927). Many Scouts in our unit refused to add the 9 to uniforms and even to this day some Westark troops resist accepting the additional digit.

1977:

Pack 121 met at Jackson Elementary’s gym (now known as the White Gym at Jackson Middle School), sponsor was the Jackson Elementary PTA (confirm??). As the Pack grew, so did Troop 935. Dave Hoce joined as Scoutmaster moving up from the Pack with his son, Greg. Growing pains were being realized as the Troop grew to over 60 boys. The board of McDonaldsville Church had great concerns that the Church’s facilities weren’t capable of supporting a unit of such size as more and more room was needed for weekly meetings and equipment storage. The Church Board asked the Troop Committee to find a way to reduce the size of the Troop. Nearby Troop 921 was floundering with lack of adult leadership and youth numbers. Dave Hoce, Bob Ullum, Mike Kinsey, and a number of other 935 adult leaders ‘interviewed’ as a group for the leadership, but weren’t accepted by the Church. Dave then found a willing sponsor for a new unit, Troop 257, to be formed at the recently built Jackson Christian Church (now known as Rivertree Christian Church). Ironically, Troop 921 folded shortly afterwards due to lack of adult leaders. The split that created Troop 257 took most of 935’s adult and youth membership along with the relationship with Pack 121. The remaining Troop 935 was very much smaller, and just about over night left the Troop with literally only a handful of boys, no adult leadership, and remnants of a committee. A return of past leaders Dieter Wolff, Larry Casapini along with additions of Gary Blankenship and J.T. Smith tried to get things going again. It would be a number of years before the Troop would recover from this split. The saddest outcome is that many boys left the Scouting program completely, lost in the adults' ugly and unessesary infighting during this time. However Troop 257 greatly succeeded in growth of the Scouting program in Jackson Township. Shortly afterwards, Dave Hoce left the area and Mike Kinsey succeeded him as Scoutmaster (still is as of 2007). In the mid 1990's Jackson Christian itself asked Troop 257 to leave, and in a very ugly public affair the Troop was left without a home for a number of months before a new one was found at St. John Lutheran Church on Wales Road in Massillon.

1980:

Wendell Plotner joined the Troop as an Assistant Scoutmaster in 1979, and was re-chartered as Scoutmaster at the first of the year. As Wendell was learning his new position, he was able to bring stability and consistency back to the troop that had been lacking since the split. These were lean years for the Troop, numbers falling as low as 10 active boys at times. Mr. Plotner became a character unto himself. His antics and behavior became widely known and respected throughout the Council. During a campout at Dan Thomas’s Pennsylvania Cabin, the Troop lined up to do a head count, and Mr. Plotner identified himself as ‘Zero’, and a legend was born. At the time, many boys of the troop lived in Woodmoor Estates located around Strausser Street west of Lutz. It wasn’t unusual at about 6:30pm on Tuesday evenings to see Mr. Plotner’s Snap-On Tools (or later Cornwell Tools) truck making rounds in the neighborhood picking up boys to take to Scout meetings. A number have reported that if it weren't for Mr. Plotner's insessant beeping on the horn in front of their house, many wouldn't have stayed in Scouts.

Last year of summer camp at Camp Tuscazoar. The camp was sold to the Kimble family with plans to forest and strip mine. This didn't go over very well, and many older Scouters protested greatly, and created a Save Camp Tuscazoar Foundation to campaign for preserving the old camp. Evenutally, the Founcation was able to purchase the camp back from the Kimble family and is still able to provide it's rich history for weekend camping and other Scouting related events.
